Dachshund DogHistory of the Dachshund

Daschunds were originally bred to be courageous, tough and persistent in order to hunt badgers and also foxes and rabbits. Their small size and short legs enabled them to dig foxes, badgers, and rabbits out of their dens. Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany for hunting badgers and the name, Dachshund, means "Badger Dog". Daschunds were originally larger than seen today but were bred to be smaller towards the end of the 19th century.

Appearance of the Dachshund

The Dachshund has a long tapering head with oval eyes and broad, well rounded ears set high and well back on the head. The body of the Daschund is long with short legs in relation to its body. The tail is set high on the body and hangs down. Daschunds can be short, long or wire coated. The Dachshund can be any colour except white.

Height of the Dachshund

The Daschund stands 8 to 10 inches inches from the ground to the top of the shoulder. Miniature Daschunds stand 5 to 7 inches in height.

Character of the Dachshund

The Daschund is clever, fearless, lively, persistent and affectionate forming a strong bond with its family although it can also be dominant.

Requirements of the Dachshund

The Dachshund is very active and needs regular exercise. Early training is recommended. Long Haired Dachshunds require regular grooming and regular ear cleaning is needed for all varieties of Dachshunds.

Health Problems Associated with the Dachshund

Dachshunds can be prone to slipped disc syndrome.

Lifespan of the Dachshund

The average lifespan of the Dachshund is 12 to 16 years.
